Heās got that gritty charm and a heart that beats to the rhythm of 80s rock. Benny Jay, Melbourne-born and now splitting time between Los Angeles and Australia, recently released You’re The Reason Why ā a powerful anthem about staying grounded and finding meaning in the chaos of life. With his signature sound blending nostalgic riffs and raw vocals, Benny delivers both energy and depth. We caught up with the multi-talented artist right after the drop of his latest single.
Hi Benny Jay, and thanks for sitting down with us! Letās start at the beginning ā how did music enter your life? What was the turning point?
BJ: I grew up playing drums and piano in the local church. But everything changed when I picked up a guitar at 11. I remember seeing Bon Joviās āKeep the Faithā tour ā I was in tears, overwhelmed with emotion. That night, I knew: music was my calling. It might sound clichĆ©, but Iāve never let go of that feeling. I’m still holding on.
Your new single āYouāre The Reason Whyā really hits deep. What inspired it?
BJ: Life. This world is tough ā always has been. Even as a kid, I saw how unfair it could be. This track is a reflection of that, but also of hope. Itās about staying strong, staying positive, and recognizing the people or moments that remind you why you keep going. Itās my sound, my message ā something I hope gives people that extra push, whether they’re at the gym or just feeling down.
What does your creative process look like? Do you start with lyrics or melodies?
BJ: Itās usually a melody first ā a line that pops into my head. If it sticks after 5ā10 minutes, I grab my acoustic and start humming, then lyrics start flowing based on the mood. Everything starts as a rough idea on my phone. Once it clicks, I dive into it ā could take a day, a month, or even a year. But if it doesnāt feel natural, I stop. Thatās my sign that itās not the right time. I only follow the flow if it feels real.
Letās talk gear. Whatās your go-to guitar brand?
BJ: Fender. No hesitation. Thatās the one.
Which social platform do you use most to connect with your fans?
BJ: Facebook, probably. Instagram too, but Iād pick Facebook if I had to choose.
One everyday item you just canāt live without?
BJ: My phone⦠unfortunately. Ugh. Cry!
Is there a recent news story that really impacted you?
BJ: Honestly, I try to stay away from the media ā Iām an empath and it gets to me. But Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s speeches about vaccines and children really hit home. Itās been powerful to hear truths coming to light. That moved me in a good, hopeful way.
Last 3 songs you listened to ā without cheating!
BJ: Haha, honestly? Just my own! My latest releases are on repeat ā and my family hears them all the time too (they kind of have to!).
If you could give one piece of advice to upcoming artists who want to live off their music, what would it be?
BJ: Donāt do it! Get a day job! Haha ā seriously though, itās hard work. If youāre in it for the fame or because it ālooks funā, you wonāt last. It takes guts, years of practice, and constant effort. If you really believe in your music ā go for it. But know this: whatever you think itās going to take, multiply that by a thousand. And donāt fake it. Be real. Stay true to your why.
What are your main goals for 2025?
BJ: This is the year of 12 songs ā one each month. All leading up to a full album. Itās about reaching more fans, building an audience, and letting the songs speak for themselves. No label backing, no shortcuts ā just hard work, day by day. If that sets up a tour and more studio time next year, then Iām on the right track.
Any final words for our readers?
BJ: Words are words. Iāve said plenty. The rest? The music will speak for itself.
